Climate, Migration, Refugees and the SDGs: Leaving No One
How are climate change, migration, forced displacement, human rights, security and sustainable development connected—and what does this mean for Ireland and the European Union?
This was the focus of an EU Council Presidency Associated Event hosted at University College Cork, bringing together policymakers, researchers, humanitarian organisations, civil society and migrant-community perspectives.
The event featured opening remarks from Minister of State Neale Richmond TD and UCC President and SDSN Ireland Co-Chair Professor John O’Halloran, a keynote address from Ambassador David Donoghue, and a panel moderated by Prof. Áine Ryall (UCC School of Law) with Jim Clarken (Oxfam Ireland), Seán Farrell (Trócaire), Dr Naomi Masheti (Cork Migrant Centre) and Prof. Maggie O’Neill (UCC Sociology and Criminology).
A central theme throughout the discussion was the need to look beyond policy silos and consider climate, migration, development, humanitarian action and human rights as interconnected challenges.
Hosted by SDSN Ireland, in partnership with the UNIC European University Alliance and UCC Collective Social Futures Institute, the event provided an opportunity for dialogue on how we can work together to ensure that no one is left behind.
