Key learnings for you from this research-policy bridging process
Trying to bring about change in Irish fisheries governance to make it more equitable and inclusive for the small-scale fishing sector is a slow process. Change is impeded by a fisheries governance system constructed to reflect the realities of large-scale vessels, and that does not reflect the realities and heterogeneity of the small-scale vessels that form 87.5% of the Irish fleet. A policy that is well-intentioned (in this case, the policy on managing fishing opportunities as a public resource) does not necessarily translate into practice on the ground.
